Throwback to my Art Master’s Remix Series! I take an old “master” painting from the book, “The Book of the World’s Most Beautiful Paintings,” (Printed in 1966) and change it by adding my touch on top of it.

This original was “Belfry at Douai” by Jean-Baptist Camille Corat (1796-1875)

The book copy is faded (being 60 years old), so I gave it some fresh color!

I finally finished this one! This is Dessa, a singer/rapper from Minnesota. In the summer of 2023, my bro Paul took me to a concert where she was performing on the rooftop of a hotel in Minneapolis! It was a vibe! Great show @dessa

I always like to do what my students are doing in class, so I can refamiliarize myself with what goes well and the challenges of doing what they are doing. I have found it to be very helpful!
For this assignment for my Art 2 class, students have the opportunity to choose any “building” as their subject. I decided to choose the Steensland Art Museum as my subject!
The Steensland Art Museum (formerly the Steensland Library) is on the campus of St. Olaf College (Northfield, MN). This is where I had my senior art show. All studio art majors had the opportunity to create a body of work for a week-long show. I decided on an ambitious project involving oil painting, bronze casting, and various other sculptural elements. It relied on making pedestals with eyepieces set at exact locations and paintings hung from the ceiling in exact positions. Ironically, the hanging of the show happened at the exact time I had my Track and Field conference championship. Thankfully, my girlfriend—now wife—Rachelle was willing to help hang it in my absence. I don’t think either one of us realized how difficult it would be. She worked for many hours, and she got it done! I can't thank her enough for how she saved the day!
The senior show was a way to move beyond assigned projects and take time to dream. I sketched and planned. When an advisor looked over my plan, he was like, “Seriously? You are going to do all that?” (paraphrased). But that was exactly what I wanted--set a goal and work hard to get it done. As an adult, I’ve done this many times with art projects. I love the challenge. I expect the moments when it seems too hard and I wish I hadn’t committed to something so difficult. I also expect that I’ll be working right up until the deadline, with the intense energy you see on reality cooking shows. It’s a thrill when you finally get to see all your hard work come together and see an idea turn into reality!
So, that’s a little about why I chose the Steensland Art Museum as my subject matter. It’s where I first tasted what it was like to be a legitimate artist—from idea to presentation!

The senior show was a way to move beyond assigned projects and take time to dream. I sketched and planned. When an advisor looked over my plan, he was like, “Seriously? You are going to do all that?” (paraphrased). But that was exactly what I wanted--set a goal and work hard to get it done. As an adult, I’ve done this many times with art projects. I love the challenge. I expect the moments when it seems too hard and I wish I hadn’t committed to something so difficult. I also expect that I’ll be working right up until the deadline, with the intense energy you see on reality cooking shows. It’s a thrill when you finally get to see all your hard work come together and see an idea turn into reality!
So, that’s a little about why I chose the Steensland Art Museum as my subject matter. It’s where I first tasted what it was like to be a legitimate artist—from idea to presentation!
